SAFETY · RESPECT · REPORTING
Dance freely.
Feel safe.
Look out for each other.
We want you to enjoy dancing here and feel comfortable speaking up. You can say no, ask for an adjustment or stop a dance. This page explains what we ask of everyone and where to turn if you need help.

Need help right now?
During MY Swing, speak to a Safety Team member or go to Registration. You can also ask the DJ booth or any MY Swing staff member to contact the Safety Team for you. If there is an immediate threat to life or safety in Malaysia, call 999.
You don’t have to work out whether something is “serious enough” before asking for help.
THE ESSENTIALS
The 60-second MY Swing Code
Start here: these eight points cover the essentials.
1. Everyone can say no.
Anyone may decline a dance, stop a dance, ask for more space or request an adjustment at any time. No explanation is required.
2. A dance is consent to dance — not everything.
A yes to a dance is not automatic consent to higher-risk moves, unusually intimate positioning, romantic or sexual attention, another dance or anything else.
3. Speak up when something hurts.
Pain, discomfort, excessive force, injury risk, dizziness or a movement that feels unsafe are always valid reasons to say something or stop.
4. Take care of the floor and your partner.
Control your movement, respect the space available and adapt to your partner’s physical abilities and limitations.
5. Social dancing is not an unsolicited lesson.
Safety and comfort communication is always appropriate. Technique corrections and coaching should generally be offered only when invited.
6. Respect the person, not their status.
The same standards apply to attendees, competitors, volunteers, DJs, judges, teachers, Event Directors and professionals.
7. Intoxication does not remove responsibility.
Know your limits. If your condition makes dancing or participating unsafe, MY Swing may ask you to stop.
8. Look out for each other.
You do not need to be the person directly affected to approach the Safety Team. If something concerns you, check in or ask us for help.
YOUR BODY IS ALLOWED TO HAVE BOUNDARIES TOO
If something hurts,
please say so.
Please speak up if something hurts, feels uncomfortable or seems unsafe. You don’t need dance terminology to explain it, and you don’t have to finish the song. A few simple words are enough:
“Smaller, please.”
“Less pressure.”
“No dips for me.”
“I need to stop.”
If your partner asks you to adjust, listen and make the change without arguing. Continue only if you’re both comfortable.
FULL CODE OF CONDUCT
The details, when you need them
The same Code applies to attendees, competitors, spectators, parents and guardians, teachers, judges, DJs, photographers and videographers, volunteers, vendors, staff, Safety Team members, organisers and Event Directors. A person’s status or relationship with MY Swing does not place them above it.
Where the Code applies
This Code applies throughout official MY Swing activities and event spaces, including workshops, competitions, social dancing, performances, registration areas and official activities associated with the event.
MY Swing may also consider behaviour outside an official event space when there is a meaningful connection to MY Swing or when that behaviour creates a credible safety concern for someone participating in the event. This could include relevant conduct at event-related gatherings, accommodation, private gatherings, direct messages or online interactions.
This does not mean MY Swing attempts to govern people’s private lives. It means moving harmful behaviour outside the ballroom does not automatically make it irrelevant to participant safety.
Consent, boundaries & social dance etiquette
Consent should be freely given, specific and ongoing. Anyone can decline or end a dance, ask for more space or less force, request a different connection, or decline a particular movement. Nobody needs to explain why. Previous dances, friendship, flirting or a previous relationship do not create an obligation to continue.
If someone’s comfort or willingness is unclear, slow down and ask. If someone says no, pulls away, repeatedly avoids something or asks you to stop, respect it. Do not argue with their boundary.
Ask rather than assume. Accept both yes and no graciously. Do not repeatedly ask someone who has declined you in a way that creates pressure. Nobody owes equal numbers of dances or a future dance in exchange for accepting someone else.
Prioritise your partner’s comfort and safety over showing what you can do. Adapt to the available floor space. Use extra care with deep dips, significant weight-sharing, off-axis positions, lifts or tricks, and do not use aerials or similarly risky movements on a crowded social floor.
Social dancing is primarily a space for shared dancing, not automatic instruction. Do not repeatedly correct, critique or teach your partner unless feedback has been invited. Communication about pain, comfort, injury, force, balance, physical limitations or anything affecting safety is always appropriate.
Respect boundaries before and after the song too. A dance invitation is not an invitation to physical affection, persistent flirting, personal questioning, romantic pursuit or sexual attention.
Harassment, discrimination & unacceptable behaviour
MY Swing does not accept behaviour that undermines another person’s safety, dignity or ability to participate freely. Depending on the circumstances, this may include harassment or bullying, discriminatory behaviour, unwanted sexual attention or contact, repeatedly ignoring boundaries, stalking or persistent unwanted pursuit, intimidation or threats, physical aggression or violence, deliberate or repeatedly unsafe dancing, coercion or manipulation, taking advantage of significant intoxication or impairment, abuse of professional or organisational influence, retaliation connected to a safety report, or other conduct that creates a credible risk to participant safety.
Not every awkward interaction, mistake or misunderstanding is misconduct. Our response considers context, severity, repetition, impact, power dynamics and whether behaviour changes when a boundary or concern is communicated. A mistake that is acknowledged and corrected is different from a pattern of repeatedly ignoring people’s boundaries.
Alcohol, professionals & positions of influence
People may drink responsibly where alcohol is permitted. Being intoxicated does not excuse behaviour that violates this Code. If impairment creates a safety concern, MY Swing may ask someone to stop dancing, stop participating or leave an event space. Judges, staff and professionals performing official duties are expected to maintain a level of sobriety appropriate to those responsibilities.
Influence creates responsibility. Teachers, judges, organisers, staff and influential community members may affect another person’s opportunities, competition experience, access or sense of belonging. MY Swing does not prohibit consensual relationships between adults, but professional or organisational influence must not be used to pressure someone into romantic or sexual attention, physical contact or another personal relationship.
Potential conflicts of interest involving judging, selection, employment or other decisions should be disclosed or handled through appropriate recusal where necessary.
Children, teenagers & families
We want MY Swing to remain a community where becoming a parent does not mean having to stop dancing. Babies and children may be present, subject to event and venue requirements. Parents and guardians remain responsible for supervising children in their care and making appropriate decisions about noise, late-night environments, crowded dance spaces and other event conditions.
Anyone under 18 is considered a minor for this policy. Participants under 16 must attend with a parent, legal guardian or responsible adult designated by their guardian. Participants aged 16 or 17 may participate without their guardian being continuously present where guardian consent, emergency contact information and event or venue requirements allow it.
Adults representing MY Swing carry additional responsibility when interacting with minors. Where reasonably possible, one-to-one interactions with staff, volunteers or professionals should take place in settings that are observable and interruptible. Event-related communication should involve a parent or guardian where reasonably practical, particularly for direct staff/pro communication. MY Swing staff or professionals should not arrange isolated accommodation or transport with an unrelated minor without appropriate guardian involvement.
Any concern involving a minor’s safety or welfare will be escalated to the Safeguarding Lead. Where the concern involves a parent or guardian, immediate disclosure back to that person may not be appropriate. The safety and welfare of the minor comes first.
Photography & video
MY Swing is a photographed and filmed event. By attending, participants acknowledge that they may appear incidentally in photographs or video captured in public event spaces. Official photographers and videographers may document the event, and official media may be used in accordance with MY Swing’s registration and media terms.
We also ask attendees to use common courtesy. If someone asks you to stop deliberately photographing or filming them, respect that request where reasonably possible. Competition, showcase and other official recordings may be subject to separate published event rules.
REPORTING
You do not have to figure it out alone.
You can speak with us about something that happened to you, something you witnessed, something someone disclosed to you, a pattern of behaviour, a concern involving a staff member or professional, a safeguarding concern involving a minor, or something you are simply not sure how to interpret.
You do not need evidence prepared. You do not need to confront the person first. You do not need to wait for behaviour to become severe before asking for help.
During MY Swing
Speak to a Safety Team member, go to Registration, or ask the DJ booth or another staff member to contact the Safety Team.
Online reporting — coming before MY Swing 2027
A dedicated confidential reporting channel, including an anonymous option, is not live yet. It will be added before MY Swing 2027 and will be accessible only to designated Safety personnel.
Anonymous reports matter too
When the online channel opens, anonymous reports will be welcome. They can help reveal patterns or risks, although complete anonymity may limit our ability to ask questions, verify information or communicate an outcome.
What happens when you report?
- We listen. You will not be required to confront the other person, and where possible we will avoid making you retell the same experience repeatedly.
- We consider immediate safety. Protecting people comes before completing paperwork.
- We check for conflicts. Anyone personally involved or materially conflicted steps aside.
- We understand what happened. We gather information proportionately and consider what support or outcome would feel helpful to you.
- We may take temporary protective measures. Separation, participation restrictions or temporary removal may be used while a serious concern is assessed. These are not automatically final findings.
- We decide what response is appropriate. We consider severity, repetition, previous concerns, power imbalance, impact, safeguarding issues and other relevant context.
Possible actions & immediate protective authority
Depending on the circumstances, MY Swing may use an informal conversation, clarification of expectations, education or coaching, a formal warning, behavioural conditions, monitoring, separation or no-contact arrangements within the event, removal from an activity, competition restriction or disqualification where appropriate, temporary or permanent removal from the event, removal from staff/volunteer/professional duties, refusal of future admission, escalation to relevant dance organisations, venue security, emergency services or relevant authorities.
These are not a mandatory sequence. Serious behaviour does not need to receive an informal warning before stronger action is considered.
The Safety Lead and Deputy Safety Lead may take temporary protective measures when they reasonably believe immediate safety requires them. Major long-term sanctions will normally be reviewed by at least two unconflicted Safety Team members.
Privacy, good-faith reports & no retaliation
MY Swing will handle safety information as privately as reasonably possible and limit access to people who need the information to respond appropriately. We cannot promise absolute confidentiality where safety, legal obligations, fair handling or appropriate external services require limited disclosure.
A report is not false simply because it cannot be substantiated, different people remember an event differently, no formal action is taken, or the person reporting was mistaken while acting in good faith. Deliberately fabricating material information with the intention of misleading the safety process may itself constitute misconduct.
Retaliation against someone for making a good-faith report, supporting another person, providing relevant information or participating in a safety review is itself a violation of this Code.
Previous behaviour & external reporting
MY Swing may consider credible and relevant previous behaviour, earlier reports, previous warnings, established sanctions or information supplied by other organisers or relevant organisations. External allegations are not automatically treated as established fact, but may form part of an overall safety and risk assessment.
If you are uncomfortable reporting directly to MY Swing, particularly where a concern involves event leadership, you may choose an appropriate external reporting route or relevant authority. MY Swing will not retaliate against someone for doing so.
Response times
Immediate safety concerns are addressed as urgently as circumstances require. Other contactable reports will be acknowledged as soon as reasonably possible and within 24 hours during MY Swing. Reports received after the event will normally be acknowledged within three business days.
Acknowledgement is not the same as resolution. Some concerns require time to handle responsibly.
THE MY SWING SAFETY TEAM
Safety should not sit with one person.
The Safety Team will operate separately from competition judging and normal event management so concerns are not centred solely on the Event Director or Chief Judge. If your concern involves one member of the team, you may approach another.

Support includes matters such as abuse, child neglect and sexual harassment.
For adults making a report, we will ordinarily respect your agency regarding external authorities unless immediate safety, legal requirements or other exceptional circumstances require a different response. Concerns involving minors will be escalated through our safeguarding process.
Our commitment
A code can’t prevent every difficult situation. We’re responsible for taking concerns seriously, respecting boundaries and holding people accountable—including those who teach, organise or lead the event.
You should be able to try something, make a mistake and enjoy another person’s company without pressure or humiliation. If something doesn’t feel right, please ask for support.
Looking after each other is part of being a dance community.
By registering for, attending, working at or participating in MY Swing, you agree to follow this Code of Conduct and reasonable safety directions given by the MY Swing Safety Team or event management. Last updated: 26 September 2026.
